Demilitarizing research funding

Claim:
It is estimated that the Pentagon pays for 80 percent of government sponsored research in electrical engineering, 77 percent in material sciences, and 54 percent in computer sciences. US research in science and technology is largely dependent on military funding. Demilitarizing research funding will prevent military budget cutbacks from significantly affecting national research funding, whilst enabling more research in more fields to be carried out.
