Establishing land use classifications
Implementation:
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.Agenda 21 recommends that all countries should consider undertaking a comprehensive national inventory of their land resources in order to establish a land information system in which land resources would be classified according to their most appropriate uses and in which environmentally fragile or disaster-prone areas would be identified for special protection measures.
