Having pets

In World War II, the presence of chickens in the convoys of the motor battalions of the British Eighth Army helped to maintain morale in the long push west through the African desert. Each hen knew its truck and would fly up to perch on the tailgate as the column moved off. Fresh eggs were also a welcome supplement to army rations.
