In 2000, after decades of denials, the US government conceded that workers who helped to make nuclear weapons were exposed to radiation and chemicals that produced cancer and early death. Several hundred employees, among nearly 600,000 people who had worked at 14 US nuclear-weapons plants since the start of the World War II, were expected to receive compensation that could total tens of millions of dollars.
