The range of Haliaeetus albicilla covers: Afghanistan, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bhutan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faeroe Islands, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Nepal, North Korea, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, USA, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia. Its status in Albania and Algeria is uncertain but it is thought to be extinct from these two countries.

Incidence:

Haliaeetus albicilla is considered as a "Lower Risk" sub-category "near threatened" by the IUCN Red List. CITES lists the species as "Appendix 1".
