Politically provocative geographical names

Other Names:
Provocative place names
Incidence:
The former Yugoslavian republic of Macedonia faced considerable opposition from Greece when it sort to become independent in 1992 under the name of Macedonia. Greece perceived the choice of this name to imply possible future territorial claims on the Macedonian part of Greek territory. Both the name and the constitutional charter of the nascent state were perceived to contain ethnological implications and irredentist allusions prejudicial to relations with neighbouring countries.
