Problem

Unaesthetic location of power transmission lines

Other Names:
Malpositioned electrical towers
Ill-considered pylon location
Incidence:
The newly-privatized electricity company, Scottish Power, is planning to construct a high voltage transmission line down the south west coast of Scotland and then under the sea to Northern Ireland. The very tall pylons would pass through through some of south west Scotland's finest scenery. The Northern Ireland link is regarded as a straightforward commercial deal that relieves Scotland of some of its embarrassing surplus capacity. Opposition to the line claim this an an inevitable consequence of supplanting public planning by private profit as the prime organizational motive of the electricity industry, and argue that Northern Ireland would do better to generate its own electricity.
