Medieval European Contests between Mounted Knights. One contest featured two group of knights, the Melee; another, the joust, was between two combatants. Must were never intended to result in fatalities or even serious woundings, although 'grudge' fights and accidents ded occur. However, regular tournaments in some localities were known for their rough and dangerous quality. Renaissance tournaments saw unmounted jousting, with lances or swords replaced by short spears or poleaxes. In the mounted jousting both swords and maces were used. In England only, knights and tournament competitions were not necessarily of noble or aristocratic lineage. Modern sports tournaments have no connection to this history, except through the pairing of contestants with progressive eliminations until a champion emerges. Double-elimination tournaments is the round-robin where each competitor must play every other with the best percentage of victories determining the tournament winner.]]
