Patterns & Metaphors

Symposium

Template:
A group of talks, presented by several individuals on various aspects of a single subject. A moderator coordinates the subject matter and timing. Each presentation takes about twenty minutes and the whole symposium can be limited to one hour.
[Advantages] Comparatively easy to organize, it allows for systematic and relatively complete expression of ideas, without interruption. Complex issues can be divided up and dealt with by separate speakers in logical component parts. Careful preparation with the speakers allows for close control of subject, matter, timing and style of presentations.
[Disadvantages] Dependent on the empathy and skill of the moderator and speakers. Very little interaction with and between members of the audience. Tendency towards duplication and confusing semantic differences between speakers. There is a difficulty of ensuring the appropriateness of the presentations to the conference objectives. The formality and compartmentalization of the issues limit the possibility of integration of concepts. Symposia, in spite of the best moderators, tend to run on and on.
