Human Development

Futuric responsibility

Description:
This is the awareness that one is an embodiment of the future, experienced as being out of step with the times one is in. The future is not some abstraction read about in books or seen on television, it is what one's life is creating. One finds one is projecting one's self into the future by the visualization method, like writing a script for a play and finding one's self acting it out before one has finished. The film "2001" graphically presents this experience as it thrusts one into the future with a new image of humanness.
A dimension of this experience is a sense of awe, that is fear and fascination, a realization of the crucialness of this moment and an understanding that what one is doing is the most crucial thing one could be engaged in. The sense of eager anticipation is like that of a father waiting for the birth of his first child and one knows that living on the cutting edge of history is not always an enviable position. There is a terrible sense of being alone and a fear of not being understood. Life is one risk after another. Moreover, there is no justification for taking this particular stand.
The decision is to allow one's self to be consumed by the challenge to create the new. A sense of déjà vu permeates every experience and a rejoicing in the fact that "my eyes have seen the glory". One feels sorry for all those trapped by the past and unable to experience the excitement of creating the future.
