Samprajnata samadhi

Description:
According to the teaching of Patanjali, this is a form of enstatic realization when there is still mental activity in the form of an object of consciousness and transcendental cognitive activity. The [klesa] (afflictions) or [vasana] (desires), although reduced and hidden, may still be present, there is still a seed of thought left, these may germinate and emerge into consciousness - [sabija samadhi]. [Samprajnata samadhi] has four levels: vitarka samadhi; nirvitarka samadhi; vicara samadhi; nirvicara samadhi. [Vitarka] indicates the gross or material form of the object, and indicates cogitation on this form over time; when noetic activity ceases, [nirvitarka] samadhi, "beyond vitarka", commences. [Vicara] samadhi indicates cogitation on the subtle and causal form of what is cognized; again, when noetic activity ceases, [nirvicara] samadhi, "beyond vicara", commences. The vedanta [savikalpa samadhi] is said to be synonymous.
