Enchantment

Description:
When the world is seen as unsatisfactory and the present moment as untidy and incomplete, then the goal is always to strive for a future when external conditions are a fundamental improvement on those prevailing now. This disenchantment is said to be a by-product of rationalization and estrangement from nature. In contrast, a sense of purposeful belonging to a unified and spiritually encompassing creation is typical of more primitive societies, where individuals have a deeper and more complete understanding of and control over their surroundings than is possible for someone living in a complex, scientific and technologically developed environment. Enchantment with life can be recaptured in an activity such as mountaineering, when one creates the rules and understands fully each detail of the process, having chosen the environment rather than having had it imposed from outside.
