Anamnesis

Description:
Poetry and the other arts exist in order to present images which have the power to awaken recollection of the paradise of all mythologies. That place, once and forever known, but lost, haunts people by offering a sense of inaccessible knowledge, and by a sense of estrangement from a place or state to which they feel they are native. This half forgotten paradise, whether felt to be a former state or one which we have never known, has, when brought to consciousness, a familiarity (as part of the psyche) of something recollected. That place is the ground of psyche itself and hence its deep familiarity.
