In Hinayana Buddhism, avarice is the state of being mean. It is looked on as mental ugliness or disfigurement. It has the characteristic of concealing one's own current or coming success. Its function is not bearing to share one's property with others. It manifests as shrinking from sharing or as niggardliness. The proximate cause is one's own property or success.Context:
