Truth
Description:
This virtue is central to Christian and Judaic faiths and is associated with wholeness and undistorted reality. However, particularly in this century, there is some discussion as to whether eternal truth is embodied in one religion (Christian doctrine indicating that only confessing Christians can be saved to the exclusion of believers in any other faith as well as non-believers and heretics) or whether eternal truths are to be found in all religions, with no single religion having the monopoly.Truth can be seen as a necessary counterbalance to love, both being essential for human development. The second Epistle of St John indicates that we are commanded to follow truth and that we follow what we are commanded because of love. And love is the new commandment which nevertheless we had "from the beginning". This may be compared with other writings of St John, when he refers to the "Word" (logos) as being God or refers to God as love.
