Human Development

Human development index

Description:
In order to index human progress, the [United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)] has focused attention on: (1) deprivation of life expectancy; (2) literacy; (3) income for a decent living standard. The first two are the commonly used concepts; the third is an adjusted figure for per capita income based on purchasing power of gross domestic product (GDP) figures. The index scale is based upon minimum and maximum national values of the indicators in 1987 (the GDP figure being represented by its logarithm), the three maxima and minima being numbered zero and one. The average measure on the three scales gives a country's average human deprivation index.
