Peer group initiation

Description:
In contrast to traditional initiation practices, whether rites of passage or involving membership of secret societies, this contemporary form is practised by many groups in modern society. Most typically it is associated with the acceptance of a new member of a student body, a new military recruit, a new member of a work force, or a new member of gang. In each case some form of "initiation" may be considered traditional and appropriate. The process may be limited to challenging the newcomer with some ordeal, possibly designed to humiliate, or some form of ritual may also be involved.
