Human Development

Journeying within transcendence - from bondage to freedom

Description:
A deep sense of shame brought about by inner accusations results in depression and despair. This is not a true reconciliation of conscience with Christ but of the ego and superego, an identification of the self with the act of wrongdoing, not leading to true forgiveness and therefore leaving one bound to the past in unhealthy guilt. Real, healthy guilt depends on the power of love, not fear of the loss of love, providing motivation to face the future. Distinguishing conscience from superego is necessary for inner wholeness, acceptance of past mistakes and errors and of the imperfection of the present as part of development which, through patience, can result in transformation.
Context:
The tenth section of St John's Gospel, Chapter VIII 1-12, is related to a stage in the spiritual journey of the individual.<
