Spiritual reductionism

Description:
Non-physiological medical problems are said to be of the spirit rather than the mind. Psychotherapy, in that it addresses the mind, misses the real point of the problem. Not only this, in treating the "old nature" which the scriptures say should be crucified, it compounds the problem and is an enemy of the spirit. Rather than strengthening the person, one should become weaker so that God is one's strength. In these terms, psychotherapy is said to set itself up as a substitute for the work of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual reductionism denies that psychotherapy can help in identifying and crucifying the false self and in seeing who one really is. Non-physiological problems are rooted in personal sin and should be addressed by spiritual counselling in order to trust and follow the spiritual principles of the Bible.
