Self-discipline

Description:
One of the essential steps in [jnana yoga], the way of knowledge, self discipline is said to consist of six elements: sama - calmness (overcoming of the mind's restlessness); dama - restraint (restraining of the senses, or organs of the mind); uparati - renunciation (freedom from emotional ties); titiksa - forbearance (endurance of inner conflict, indifference to praise and blame); sraddha - faith (to withstand times of discouragement and lack of vision); samadhana - self-settledness (single-minded devotion to the completion of the spiritual task).
Context:
These disciplines are the same as the six great virtues - [satkasampatti] - listed by Sankara as one of the four requirements for one who has spiritual aspirations.<
