Occupational therapy

Description:
Individuals who are inactive or confined to bed usually do not recuperate as well as those who are in some way occupied, particularly if they are also psychologically disturbed. Occupational therapy involves such persons in tasks appropriate to their capabilities and disabilities. It is suggested that the method can assist individuals to gain some insight into their psychological condition, leading to improved sociability and self-confidence.
[Diversional therapy] comprises those activities in occupational therapy designed simply to occupy the patient and divert his or her mind from the surroundings. Other activities involved in occupational therapy may also have the goal of overcoming specific disabilities or handicaps, improving motor coordination, or of rendering the patient physically capable of rehabilitation into useful work. The social aspect of group working has a beneficial recuperative effect, but occupational therapy in the patient's home or at other time's when the patient is alone is also of value.
