Centering

Description:
Centering exercises are used as an introduction to meditation and as a means of aiding relaxation and facilitating concentration, leading to a sense of inner equilibrium. The process may begin by focusing attention on the physical centre of gravity of the body and feeling the relationship of the body to the earth and the space surrounding it. Experiencing the sense of balance and support provided by the floor or a chair helps to focus attention on physical sensations. Attention may be directed to the surface of the skin, body boundaries, and the flow of energy associated with the circulatory system. Focusing attention on the centre of physical energy (associated with the solar plexus according to Eastern traditions) while noticing the movements of breathing may also be used.
Centering may also be used as a general term for any mental or imaginative exercises designed to facilitate access to a higher state of consciousness.
