Urging countries to dispose of their own waste in their own territory

Context

In a number of countries, transboundary movement takes place to ensure that waste is managed in an environmentally sound and efficient way. Such movement observes the relevant conventions, including those that apply to areas that are not under national jurisdiction.

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends encouraging countries to seek waste disposal solutions within their sovereign territory and as close as possible to the sources of origin that are compatible with environmentally sound and efficient management.
