Strengthening role of UNEP in the follow-up to UNCED and in implementing Agenda 21

  • Continuing UNEP Governing Council role for policy guidance and coordination on environment

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 indicates that, in the follow-up to the Conference, there will be a need for an enhanced and strengthened role of UNEP and its Governing Council. The Governing Council should within its mandate continue to play its role with regard to policy guidance and coordination in the field of the environment, taking into account the development perspective.
