Researching fuelwood use

Since 1990, the Stockholm Environment Institute has been engaged in projects to improve energy efficiency and lower emission from the use of woodfuel by small industries. The work has been concentrated in Latin America, mainly Ecuador and Bolivia, and has primarily covered brick making and lime burning. In 1993, similar studies were initiated in Tanzania where, as in most African countries, small industries or services consume a fairly large amount of fuelwood and result in environmental impacts considerably greater than that from a similar amount of woodfuel used in households. The industries under study are brick burning and tobacco curing.
