Reducing threat of birds to aircraft safety

  • Minimizing threat of birds to aircraft safety
  • Coping with bird strikes

Description

Bird strikes cause damage to military and civilian aircrafts costing millions of dollars annually, and may even result in the loss of life. In order to evaluate the severe hazard birds can cause to aviation it is important to know which bird species are involved to avoid problems in the future.

Implementation

The Bird Remains Identification System (BRIS) is a joint Israel/Netherlands computer based project which provides identification information on over 200 European species of bird involved with aircraft strikes. The European Centre for the Identification of Bird Remains provides additional information and up to date monitoring on the instances of bird strikes with aircraft.
