Reducing methane emissions from petroleum production

  • Decreasing methane released from gas pipelines

Description

Reducing methane emissions from energy use are dominated by methane leakage and venting during production, transportation and/or distribution of natural gas and coal.

Context

In the former Soviet Union, as much as 4 to 9% of natural gas produced may be lost due to natural gas pipeline ruptures (50-70 each year) and leakage during both natural gas production stages and distribution networks. There is no evidence of a slowdown in Soviet gas production.
