Promoting independent learning

  • Advocating non-formalized education
  • Supporting alternative education

Implementation

Alternatives to state school education are possible in the USA, Canada, France and some other countries. Some forms of new alternative education being created include parent cooperatives, home school resource centres, charter schools, public at-risk alternatives, public choice and magnet schools, Montessori and Waldorf schools.

Claim

True intellectual breakthroughs have always come from independent scholars outside the academic community: Einstein, Freud, Will Durant and Bertrand Russell are examples. New seminal ideas are being developed by non-academics: Ivan Illich, Rachel Carson, Ralph Nader, E F Schumacher, Paul Goodman and James Lovelock.
