Managing drylands

  • Researching arid zones
  • Studying landuse in marginal areas
  • Improving management of resources in vulnerable drylands

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends: supporting applied research on ways of reducing water loss from soils, on ways of increasing the water absorption capacities of soils and on water harvesting techniques in drought-prone areas; improving management of soil and water resources.
