Finding waste management solutions for densely populated areas and small islands

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 indicates the need to find solutions to and equipment for managing waste in areas of concentrated population and on small islands. There is a particular need for appropriate refuse storage and collection systems and cost-effective and hygienic human waste disposal options.
