Expanding educational opportunities for all children
Implementation
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends expanding educational opportunities for children and youth, including education for environmental and developmental responsibility, with overriding attention to the education of the girl child.
In Sudan recently, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) established eight state-level committees and in cooperation national NGOs implemented an emergency education project that benefited over 270,000 displaced children. Over 1,000 teachers were trained and provided with educational kits. Students kits were also distributed, and additional educational supplies were made available to 1,000 schools in the south of the country.
