Creating global alliance for environmental sustainability
- Cooperating on global environmental issues
- Globalizing environmental alliance
Description
The processes of globalization that are so strongly influencing the evolution of society need to be directed towards resolving rather than aggravating the serious imbalances that divide the world today. All the partners involved – governments, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, the scientific community, NGOs and other major groups – need to work together to resolve this complex and interacting set of economic, social and environmental challenges in the interests of a more sustainable future for the planet and human society.
Context
Environmental degradation and their effects are transboundary in nature. Many environmental resources such as river basins are shared between nations. Human civilization in its many dimensions: social, economic, cultural and political, is moving towards globalism or global interdependence. It is widely agreed that international cooperation in the form of a global alliance is required to address these global issues, whose problems include the ozone hole, third world debt, and unsustainable resource consumption and population growth, in order to achieve global sustainability.
Implementation
EarthAction International creates pressure for fundamental changes in the international system by empowering ordinary voters and global citizens groups to work on global change. As a global network of voters, it aims to persuade politicians to work to protect the Earth through: protection of the global environment; combatting hunger and poverty; ending militarization and the production of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons; strengthening the capacity of the United Nations to keep the peace, defend human rights and safeguard the atmosphere and oceans.
