Conserving endangered species of birds

  • Protecting endangered species of birds
  • Reducing number of birds at risk of extinction
  • Preventing extinction of bird species at risk

Implementation

Long fishing lines that spare the dolphin but kill albatrosses is a problem everyone wants to solve, for even the fishermen would sooner catch fish than birds. According to a 1995 report, various solutions were tried, such as attaching streamers to the back of the boat to scare away the birds or casting the hooks away from the ship's wake so they will sink faster. Norway went further, by adapting its boats to cast out the lines from under the stern, so the baited hooks never break the surface, whereas New Zealand wanted a ban on long lines.

Counter-claim

At its precipitous rate of decline, all efforts may come too late to save the wandering albatross from oblivion.
