Conditioning radioactive waste

  • Partial stabilizing of radioactive wastes
  • Interim treating of nuclear reactor waste
  • Treating nuclear industry waste

Description

Reducing the long-lived waste from recycling spent fuels; conditioning the remaining waste in order to be suitable for interim storage or direct (final) disposal).

Implementation

A liquid radioactive waste bitumenization facility was commissioned in 1992 at the Kalinin nuclear installation in Russia. A similar facility has been completed at the Balakovo site. A fuel management centre (consolidation, cementing, pressing and incineration facilities) is to be commissioned at the Balakovo nuclear site in 1994.
