A 1996 proposal to lower the age of consent in Belgium from 16 to 14 was rejected by the Christian Democrat Party. It was part of a draft document on the modernization of the laws relating to physical and sexual abuse, which suggests ways of changing the vague and sometimes contradictory laws relating to violence in the family to better protect women and children.
