Assessing costs and financing to meet primary health care needs

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

Raising of health services levels to achieve two Agenda 21 objectives requires expenditure of more than US$ 20,000 million each annually. A contribution of about US$ 5,000 million would have to be provided from international financial sources towards the total cost of US$ 40,000 million per annum. This would include US$ 10 million annually for the strengthening of regional and global institutions which support national capacity-building in this area.
