Wastage of highly skilled personnel in the routine maintenance of complex systems

Complex computer systems are designed and implemented by a team of relative experts. Because they know ever part if the system, they end up becoming the maintenance people for the system, a boring, dead end job. They will spend years in this position and when they finish they will be untrained in new generations of hardware and software. They will have lost their chances for promotion within in their own company and will have difficulty in finding jobs elsewhere.
