Threatened seasonal inland saline lake habitats

  • Endangered intermittent brackish lakes
  • Threatened semi-permanent alkaline lake environments
  • Threatened playa lake habitats
  • Threatened dry salt lake habitats
  • Threatened hbitats of salares

Nature

Pollution (acidification) may affect such bodies of water. In arid areas climate change and variability will also affect such lakes. Other factors may include the rate of water abstraction lowering the water table and reducing the store of underground water.

Background

Wind erosion can form shallow depressions which often contain water temporarily or seasonally (e.g. dune lakes in sandy areas, playa lakes of flat, arid or semi-arid regions).
