Threatened limentic habitats of lakes and reservoirs

  • Threatened freshwater lake floor habitats
  • Endangered lacustrine benthic environments

Nature

Eutrophication triggers algal blooms which limits light penetration and reduces macrophytic growth (rooted and floating aquatic plants).

Background

The Benthic habitat relies on photosynthesis by blue-green algae and other benthic algae to produce much of the food needed by benthic grazers. Additional food comes in the form of detritus that settles from the water.
