Nature

Restrictive clothes can cause skin irritation, provide conditions for disease organisms to flourish, restrain or overheat parts of the body.

Background

Foot binding, formerly practised in China, involved crushing and binding to permanently deform the bones of women's feet. In previous centuries restrictive corsets were responsible for deforming the ribcages of young girls and causing shortness of breath.

Incidence

Tight jeans are claimed to produce sterility in men. In one part of Africa, metal rings around a woman's neck to elongate it; in another girls passing through puberty have heavy metal ceremonial rings fitted around their legs.
