Hate mail

  • Threatening letters

Nature

Unsolicited letters containing abusive language and accusations, often accompanied by threats.

Incidence

Media personalities and other public figures are frequently exposed to hate mail, whether by those who disagree with them, or who suffer from personality disorders. In the UK in 1994, letters containing excrement, used condoms, razor blades and fake bombs was sent to a government agency in a systematic campaign by aggrieved citizens. In the USA people taking public positions unsympathetic to certain fundamentalist religious views are frequently exposed to hate mail.
