Drug abuse by young drivers

  • Alcohol abuse by juvenile drivers

Incidence

In one locality in the USA, 40% of the alcohol-related fatal accidents involved drivers aged 24 years or under whereas 20% of the licensed drivers were in this age group. A Norwegian road survey revealed that 2% of the drivers had a blood-alcohol level higher than the legal limit (0.05%) and 20% of these drivers were under 23 years of age. The accident vulnerability (involvement with exposure held constant) of the 18-19 year old driver group, but not of 20-65 year old drivers, is increased at relatively low blood-alcohol levels (0.01-0.04%).
