Ways of knowing (Christianity)

Meister Eckhart distinguishes two ways of knowing. The first, "lower knowing" or discursive reasoning, is common to all and is neither spiritual nor leads to the attainment of God. "Higher knowing" or spiritual knowledge is consistent with imageless prayer. A spark is kindled in the soul, a fire which leaps up and strives towards heaven.
