Description
While maintaining relations with his family, the married man develops further mental abstinence and detachment, gaining in spiritual maturity. Living among his possessions he nevertheless develops the spirit of dispossession and maintains a sense of detachment in all his activities. When his sons come of age he may renounce possessions and family, retiring into solitude for contemplation and meditation.
Context
This is the third of the four ashramas or stages of life according to Indian tradition, leading eventually to self-realization.
