Sanyasashrama (Hinduism)
- Mendicant stage of life
Description
As a homeless beggar-saint, the sanyasi renounces the world and becomes fully attuned to the consciousness within. His fire-coloured ochre robe indicates the burning away of the body and of claims on society. Wanting nothing from the world, he is dedicated to giving, service and sacrifice for the bettering of humanity.
Context
This is the fourth of the four ashramas or stages of life according to Indian tradition, leading eventually to self-realization.
