Usual state of consciousness (USC)

Description

The state is described by H Evans as the everyday condition, the equilibrium state to which the individual reverts after any alternate state experience. It is characterized by a degree of control over thoughts and actions and by a sense of identity. Surroundings are perceived apparently as they are perceived by others. Behaviour in the usual state may vary but the individual will be aware of what he is doing. The usual state varies between individuals, depending, for example, on differences in personality and cultural background. These differences will affect the likelihood of an individual experiencing an alternate state and how he reacts to experiencing such a state.
