Description
This refers to the tranquillizing of the three aggregates of feeling, perception and formation or mental activities. The characteristic is pacifying suffering and quieting disturbance of the mental body, the function is to crush its suffering and disturbance. It is manifest as unwavering, inactive and coolness. Mental factors are the proximate cause and it is the opponent of corruption or defilement causing disturbance or lack of peace in the mental body due to distraction, agitation and so on. Tranquillity of mental body and tranquillity of consciousness are considered together.
Context
One of the formations aggregate (mental coefficients) of Hinayana Buddhism, being listed among the constant states which appear in their true nature, and as profitable primary (always present in any profitable or profitable-resultant consciousness).
