Description

This refers to the tranquillizing of the aggregate of consciousness. The characteristic is pacifying suffering and quieting disturbance of the citta, the function is to crush its suffering and disturbance. It is manifest as unwavering, inactive and coolness. Consciousness is the proximate cause and it is the opponent of corruption or defilement causing disturbance or lack of peace in the citta due to distraction, agitation and so on. Tranquillity of mental body and tranquillity of consciousness are considered together.

Context

One of the formations aggregate (mental coefficients) of Hinayana Buddhism, being listed among the constant states which appear in their true nature, and as profitable primary (always present in any profitable or profitable-resultant consciousness).
