Description

A buddha is endowed with ten powers or abilities leading to ten kinds of knowledge. These are: direct knowledge of sources and non-sources, achieved with steadfastness in ascertaining the relation of cause and effect (one source refers to what is possible and what is impossible); direct knowledge of the fruits of action, achieved through conviction of the relationship between causes and their effects; knowledge of abilities of other beings, those who have faith and those who are afflicted, gained through teaching in accordance with the faculties of those being taught; knowledge of the variety of dispositions or tendencies of other beings, gained through teaching in accordance with the dispositions of those taught; knowledge of the variety of interest, of the constituents of the world, gained through teaching in accordance with the interests of those taught; knowledge (through practice) of the paths leading to cyclic existences and those leading to the three enlightenments; knowledge (through practice of meditative stabilizations) of concentrations, liberations, stabilizations, absorptions, and of others' afflictions and non-contaminations, purity and impurity; knowledge of former lives (one source does not refers to this but lists the previous kind of knowledge as two kinds); knowledge of former births and deaths (including the clairvoyance of the divine eye); knowledge of the extinction of all contaminations and defilements.

Such knowledge pierces the armour of obstruction to omniscience, destroys the walls of obstructions to meditative stabilization, and cuts the trees of afflictive obstructions.
