Sopadhisesanirvana (Buddhism)

  • Sa-upadisesanibbana (Pali)
  • Sopadhisheshanirvana
  • Nirvana with remainder

Description

This is a state recognized in Hinayana Buddhism when, on becoming an [arhat]

, cravings - [klesa]

- are eradicated, there is dispassion or "fading away", but inherent tendencies - [skandha]

- are not eradicated. These are the remainder. Nirvana has been reached but, during the arahant's life, the aggregates which result from the past still cling and are understood in terms of suppressing vices or defilement and the results of past clinging. There is therefore no real liberation from suffering as remaining [karma]

has to be worked off; after death, however, all empirical existence and therefore all suffering are over and full nirvana - [parinirvana]

or [nirupadhisesanirvana]

- arises, a state of total extinction.
